Collegetown at West End Master Plan

Atlanta, GA

EE&K completed a Master Plan for Collegetown at West End in the area of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) of Atlanta, the largest and arguably most prestigious concentration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Morehouse College, Morehouse Medical School, Spelman College, Morris Brown and Clark Atlanta University).

In 1999, the Housing Authority of the City of Atlanta received a $35 million HOPE VI grant from HUD to be used for the revitalization of the Harris Homes public housing community. The plan establishes small, interior parked blocks, walkable, tree-lined streets with parallel parking, a system of connected small and large residential parks, a variety of housing types, and a town center.

EE&K has guided the urban design vision to integrate new residential construction with adjacent neighborhoods. The vision establishes a strong connection to the AUC campuses by making Joseph P. Lowery Boulevard the new main street and physical link between the campuses and the new neighborhood.

Highest density housing and commercial development on Lowery maintains a scale consistent with the adjacent campus buildings. The main public space will be the new Collegetown Square, a place that benefits the entire community, residents and colleges alike, enhancing and defining a new vision for this Collegetown.
